NUR3643 Research and Theory: Deliverable 3 Template

As a recent BSN graduate, you sign-up to join a journal club on your clinical unit. The journal club serves as a collective effort to remain current with the literature. The purpose of the journal club is to provide a strategy for evaluating current research and translating it to nursing practice. The facilitator of the journal club has asked you to select, critically appraise, and present your findings at the next meeting. Since this is your first time presenting, the facilitator provides a worksheet to guide you through the process.

Instructions

Select one current nursing research article that may be translated into evidence-based practice. Review the article and complete the worksheet provided. Your analysis will include the required elements of the research process and will begin the evaluation phase of appraising the literature.

· Identify the steps or elements of the study

· Determine the strengths and limitations of the research study

· Evaluate the credibility and meaning of the study findings

Resources

· Worksheet

· How to read an article

· Where do I find the permanent links to articles in library databases?

· How do I find quantitative nursing articles?

· How do I find qualitative nursing articles?

· How do I find evidence-based practice articles? Or nursing best practices?

Bottom of Form

Deliverable 03 – Critical Appraisal of the Literature

Competency: Differentiate the components of the research process.

· Find a current nursing research article (studies will have method sections) published within the past five years and include the permalink for the article you selected

· Review the nursing research article and complete the template.

· You must complete this deliverable in your words; do not copy and paste from the study.

What is the identified research problem? Does the author include the significance and background of the problem?

· Describe the identified research problem

· Discuss the significance and background of the problem

· Provide 2-3 sentences for this section

Did the author clearly articulate the research purpose? What was the purpose of the research?

· Clearly state the research purpose

· Provide 1-2 sentences in this section

Identify the study methodology.

· Type of study

· Sample Size (number of participants in the study or number of studies if this was a systemic review or meta-analysis)

· Was there an intervention? If so, what was it?

· What outcome was measured?

· How was it measured?

· Who was in the study?

· Where was the study completed?

· What were the results?

· This section should be no more than 1-2 paragraphs.

Did the article include a relevant review of the literature? Explain.

· This content is located primarily in the literature review, but discussion of prior evidence may be found in other sections of the nursing research article.

· This section should be no more than 3-4 sentences.

Describe the theoretical framework for the research study

· Consider nursing theories

· If not clearly stated in the research article, which theoretical framework could you apply to the study and why?

· This section should be no more than 4-5 sentences.

What research objectives, questions, hypotheses, and procedures were identified in the article?

· Provide a summary of the research objectives, questions, hypothesis, and procedure.

Describe the study’s results (findings) and identify strengths and limitations.

· For strengths and limitations, sometimes an author does not identify them, and it is up to you to figure them out. Consider these questions: was there a big sample size, what would increase the reliability of the study, was there pre- post-test data, does the type of data collection and analysis increase the reliability of the study, and were there valid measurements taken?

Discuss the findings, including their relevance to clinical practice.

· What are four implications/recommendations for practice (this is how the information from the study can be used in nursing practice)?

· What is the credibility of the study? What makes it believable?
