For this assignment, students will conduct an analysis of a historical document found in the SJSU library archives. Specifically, students will conduct an analysis of a primary source pre-selected by Dr. Dao and Ms. Carli Lowe in relation to SJSU Sports History. Please see the list of topics below.
Objectives:
identify and interpret primary source documents within a historical context
evaluate and appreciate the dynamic nature of SJSU sports
integrate creative writing, historical analysis, and technology
examine a primary source and summarize the content of the source
Instructions:
Write a 3-4 page research paper that describes your research on the assigned topic (double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins). The paper must contain the following elements:
Provide a brief narrative history of your topic with an appropriate title.
Provide a descriiption of the primary sources researched in the college archive specifying key components
Analysis of the primary sourced which includes but is not limited to:
Story/meaning of the time
Critical unpacking of story/meaning during modern times
Interpretive history analysis – what is the historical message? Why is it important?
Connection to a contemporary topic/issue
Student analysis that contextualizes the archival document
3-5 Peer-Reviewed Sources REQUIRED

Suggested format:
Introduction
Introduces archive document
States purposes of assignment and what will be analyzed
Historical Background
Here students need to conduct some outside research to contextualize the historical times that archive is set in
Descriiptive analysis
Interpretive analysis
What questions are prompted by the document?
What information is it telling you? What is not telling you?
What would you need to know to better understand the document (or topic/issue)?
Connect to contemporary times
Conclusion
Guiding Questions
What was the meaning of this document at the time of its conception?
What are the various meanings that may arise now?
How/what are the differences between past readers and current readers of the document?
What is your interpretation of the document?
What connections can you make to contemporary times?
